My name is Justin. I live in Australia and I am a recovering stutterer. I joined the McGuire program in October of 2005. Since then I have done 7 McGuire programs over 15 months including one in the UK in a small town called Wigan.
The picture in the header is of me standing in market street in Wigan, UK North. On my second McGuire program in 2006. Wigan is about 25 Miles out of Manchester. Manchester is about 250 miles North of London.
I started to stutter when I was about 5. I get asked a lot how I started to stutter or why but there is no clear answer. Trying to find blame for my stutter is counter productive in my recovery. I don’t want to be a victim. What has happened I cannot change, but I can guide my future where I want.
Noone in my family had a stutter. It was just something that started. I started to use lead in words a lot saying “oo um what is that” or “oo um can I have a drink”. All I remember about that behavior is people finding it cute.
At some point it turned into a stutter that controlled my life.
